Every language has its own history, every language has the many different ways of speaking and English is no doubt the same. Throughout history, thousands of words have been embraced from all around the world within the English language.
The evolution of the English language initiated during the fifth century. Many battles occurred during that time and the result was the eventual occupation of the land by the Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Land Frisians. During the 8th, 9th and 10th centuries, Vikings came and brought their spoken German language to England which merged with English. That is what we now call Old English, it refers to and belongs to the German dialects as it originated from there.
Around 1,000-1,200 years ago, the Vikings took over Northern and North-western Europe, they spoke a language which we call Old Norse. We adapted and adopted more than 2,000 new words which include our everyday familiar words such as: give, egg, knife, husband, run and many more. During 1,000 AD when the French arrived in England, we implemented and reformed our way of speech by applying their everyday words such as beer, city, and fruit. Also, half the months of the year is derived from their dialect. During this time, Old English was left to the laborers and the Royal used Latin and French to display hierarchy.
Renaissance period and Modern English
So, how did our modern English emanate? In the course of the 14th– 15th century after years of war with France, the French occupation ended in England and the English language once again became superior. During these years, the renaissance period had risen. The infamous play writer of Romeo and Juliet and English Language influencer Shakespeare impacted the development of English. Though his uniqueness and arts are hard to grasp for some, he is credited as he invented at least 1,700 English words. Some of these include puppy, dog and fashionable. Resources became much more available, spelling and grammar were fixated and the first publishing houses were built. Reading and printing became more prevalent and many more people had the opportunity to learn English as a modern language.
The English we know
The English Language we now speak has been created through many years of polishing, eliminating and condensing. History and all that happened way before our time have created our dialectal speech. English spread further throughout the world due to the colonisation of the lands and became influential within TV, Music, trade, and technology. In the present day, approximately 1,000 new words are permitted to be added to the English dictionary. This is due to the communications which are available such as the technology that we have. It has allowed the fast increase and nurtured the language further. So, in conclusion, learning English has always been beneficial and worth the effort as it can only develop your abilities.
